Shop Goodwill and Help People Earn Jobs!

Marion Goodwill is excited to celebrate and recognize National Thrift Shop Day on Friday, August 17! By shopping at one of our 9 retail stores, you can find a vast array of clothing, accessories, furniture and home décor for a fraction of the price. But our affordable and vintage finds aren’t the only unique thing about us: when you donate and shop at Goodwill you do good for your community.

The revenue from the sale of goods at our retail stores is used to provide community programs and support services such as digital skills training, job readiness classes, and résumé reviews for people who are struggling to find employment. Marion Goodwill provides opportunities for youth, seniors, people with disabilities and people who are underrepresented in the labor market

This special holiday, Marion Goodwill will be sharing unique assets and videos using the hashtags #BringGoodHome and #NationalThriftShopDay.

“National Thrift Shop Day is always a good time to share our story with our customers. Yes, we’re the store where you can score great deals on fashionable clothing and household items, but we’re also providing services to place people in our community into jobs or help them find new career paths”, said Kathy Wink, Director of Marketing.

So when you’re deciding which store to celebrate with remember that you can make a difference in your community when you grab unique finds at Goodwill!

Back-to-School Buys for Every Age

Over the next few weeks, students of all ages will be returning to school. Whether you are enrolled in grad school or your little one is heading off to kindergarten, thrift shopping for your back-to-school needs is the best way to stick to a budget and prepare yourself for the year ahead.

In the world of back-to-school shopping, there are sweaters and lunch boxes, and then there are couches and foosball tables. In college, students finally have the freedom to furnish their own space. They work hard on papers and focus fastidiously during lectures, so in their downtime they deserve to relax and enjoy themselves with some slightly frivolous purchases. The big problem for college students, though, is funding: being newly independent means being suddenly (and shockingly) aware of your living expenses. That’s why Goodwill is a college student’s best friend – low prices for everything an undergrad could possibly need.

Good luck to anyone heading back to school this fall, no matter your age or grade level. May your year pass by with minimal stress and just the right amount of challenge to help you grow. You can do it!

Be a Voter this November
By Joshua Alvarez

Election Day 2018 is less than 90 Days away. And as states across the country wrap up their primaries voters are starting to focus their attention on this year’s midterm elections. With this election right around the corner, Americans should do what’s needed to make sure they can cast a vote this November.

One might ask, why are midterm elections so important? It’s because the upcoming mid-term elections will shape American politics for the next two years and beyond. Who’s all on the ballot this November 6th? All 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate, and 36 out of 50 state governorships, along with many state and local offices will all be on the ballot. To help ensure our supporters, customers, program participants, and advocates are able to vote this November, Goodwill Industries International (GII) is one of the nearly 2,000 nonprofits working with Nonprofit Vote to promote National Voter Registration Day (NVRD).

NVRD will take place Tuesday, September 25, 2018. On this day volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts, to create awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.

Participating in local and national elections is vital to our democracy. Nonprofits across the country share in the responsibility to help those people we work with engage in the political process in a nonpartisan manner. As 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofits, organizations like Goodwill® have to refrain from endorsing any specific candidates or party.

If you personally want to be involved in NVRD this year, the first thing you should do is make sure you are registered to vote and that your registration is up to date (especially if you moved since you last voted). After that the next best way to be involved is to register to be an official partner during NVRD. In doing so, you’ll be able to help those people in your community and make sure they are able to voters this November too.
